In June of 2022, shortly after its core concept went viral online, Dread Central who published the initial story that tipped the public off to its existence about a week prior spoke with the director of “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” in order to learn more details about the film that had horror fans buzzing at that time. In response to the publication’s first couple of questions, its director provided some plot details that serve as a basic synopsis of just what to expect in “Blood and Honey.”

First, he specified that its versions of Pooh and Piglet are not humans in masks but a humanoid bear and a humanoid pig just as in the source text. Their reason for becoming violent is that Christopher Robin fed them when he was younger, before growing up and leaving them to fend for themselves without a proper source of food. They hunt and kill humans, then, both for sustenance and out of anger at their lot in life. Eventually an adult Christopher returns with his finacee, which enrages Pooh and Piglet, setting them off on a killing spree that drives the balance of the film.

But Wait There’s More: Bambi Is Also Getting His Own Horror Movie

Remember how Bambis mom tragically dies in Disneys 1942 animated movie? Yeah, its about to get a lot more traumatizing.

Director Scott Jeffrey is working on a slasher version of Felix Salten’s nearly 100-year-old Bambi novel.

Jeffrey promises an incredibly dark retelling of the tale. “Bambi will be a vicious killing machine that lurks in the wilderness, he tells Dread Central. Prepare for Bambi on rabies!”

The film, titled Bambi: The Reckoning, is inspired by the Netflix movie “The Ritual,” which follows four men who encounter a dreadful creature in a mysterious forest while on a hiking trip.

Jeffrey is teaming up with Frake-Waterfield for the movie, which has already began production, according to IMDB.

Is There A Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey Trailer

Jagged Edge Productions released the first official trailer for Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey on Aug. 31. Within the nearly two minute-long clip, it’s safe to say that the slasher film features far more blood than it does honey.

The trailer begins with Christopher Robin and his female love interest on a trek to find Pooh and Piglet, whom Christopher says were his “friends of many years.” As the couple walk into the eery forest, a weathered jar of honey flashes on the screen, in addition to a wooden sign that reads “100 Acre Woods” in what appears to be you guessed it blood.

With suspenseful music building in the background, his love interest spots another sign that reads “Eeyore R.I.P.” followed by her suggestion to “quickly leave,” but Christopher insists that they stay.

Quickly, chaos ensues. Pooh appears on the screen, in a manner that is far from cuddly and Piglet is no different, as he’s pictured with an ax on a killing rampage. The suspenseful music then combines with screams for a trailer that seriously sets the scene.

Bambi A Life In The Woods

Bambi, a Life in the Woods is a 1923 Austriancoming-of-age novel written by Felix Salten and originally published in Berlin by Ullstein Verlag. The novel traces the life of Bambi, a male roe deer, from his birth through childhood, the loss of his mother, the finding of a mate, the lessons he learns from his father, and the experience he gains about the dangers posed by human hunters in the forest.

An English translation by Whittaker Chambers was published in North America by Simon & Schuster in 1928, and the novel has since been translated and published in over thirty languages around the world. Salten published a sequel, Bambi’s Children, in 1939.

The novel was well received by critics and is considered a classic, as well as one of the first environmental novels. It was adapted into a theatrical animated film, Bambi, by Walt Disney Productions in 1942, as well as two Russian live-action adaptations in 1985 and 1986, a ballet in 1987, and a stage production in 1998. Another ballet adaptation was created by an Oregon troupe, but never premiered. Janet Schulman published a children’s picture book adaptation in 2000 that featured realistic oil paintings and many of Salten’s original words.

Is Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey Associated With Disney

Despite Milne’s 1926 Winnie the Pooh book entering the public domain, Disney still owns exclusive use of their interpretations of Pooh Bear and his friends, according to Variety.

“We’ve tried to be extremely careful,” said Waterfield on the podcast. “We knew there was this line between that, and we knew what their copyright was and what they’ve done. So we did as much as we could to make sure was only based on the 1926 version of it.”

Influence On Popular Culture

The Te of Piglet was written by Benjamin Hoff following the publication of The Tao of Pooh. Both books feature the original drawing of E. H. Shepard. The Te of Piglet details Piglet’s exemplification of the Taoist concept of “virtue of the small”.

In 1982, whilst studying at Oxford University as an undergraduate, the columnist and commentator Andrew Sullivan adopted the persona of Piglet in holding office in the University Pooh Sticks Club as cited in the 1987 book The Oxford Myth.

How Does Walt Disney Feel About This

The House of the Mouse has not commented on the film and bloody outcry.

But Winnie the Pooh is among the most valuable media franchises in the world, accumulating more than $80 billion through the years, putting it on par with Mickey Mouse, according to The Motley Fool. The investing advice company estimates that Pooh and friends generate $3 billion to $6 billion annually for Disney.

“Disney is going to lose millions and a valuable copyright that its been able to leverage on all sorts of merchandise. But its had protection for years and has been granted term extensions,” Donald P. Harris, associate dean for academic affairs at Temple University’s Beasley School of Law, told the university’s website.

Where Was Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey Filmed

Inspired by the story from English author A. A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was filmed in 10 days in England.

Variety also reports that the upcoming horror film was shot near Ashdown Forest, which was the location that inspired Hundred Acre Wood.

Although the filmmaker did not reveal the budget for the film, he did tell the outlet it is not a Hollywood-size budget.

He said fans “shouldnt be expecting this to be a Hollywood-level production.”

The new film was produced by Jagged Edge Productions. Waterfield runs the company along with co-producer Scott Jeffrey.

ITN Studios will be responsible for the film’s distribution.

Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet will be played by Craig David Dowsett and Chris Cordell, respectively. Both Dowsett and Cordell have collaborated with Frake-Waterfield in the past, appearing in films like Spider in the Attic, The Area 51 Incident, H.P. Lovecraft’s Monster Portal, and 2022’s Croc!. Christopher Robin will be played by Nikolai Leon, who’s also been in Frake-Waterfield’s The Killing Tree.

The movie is loosely based on Milne’s famous characters.

Director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who also wrote and co-produced the film, told Variety in May that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is a horror film starring Pooh and Piglet as “the main villains going on a rampage” after being abandoned by a college-bound Christopher Robin. While Robin was away at school, the two once-lovable pals turned “feral” in their quest for food and survival. “Its made Pooh and Piglets life quite difficult,” Frake-Waterfield said.

The film was shot in 10 days in England, not far from Ashdown Forest, the inspiration for Milnes imaginary Hundred Acre Wood in the “Winnie the Pooh” stories.

A “Blood and Honey” poster issued last month carried the warning, “This ain’t no bedtime story.”

Christmas Slasher ‘the Mean One’ Takes Page From ‘blood And Honey’

Winnie the Pooh isn’t the only beloved childhood icon getting the horror film treatment.

“The Mean One” serves a macabre parody of the Dr. Seuss character Grinch, the green-haired beast and holiday curmudgeon popularized in the 1957 children’s book, and later 1966 TV film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”

Directed by Steven LaMorte, “The Mean One” keeps the signature grouchiness of the Grinch, with the “green-skinned grump … living on a mountain high above the festive small town of Newville, despising the holiday season,” according to a news release on LaMorte’s website.

The sinister twist is that The Mean One “butchered” the parents of Cindy You-Know-Who, a play on “Grinch” protagonist Cindy Lou Who, two decades ago. Cindy returns to “seek closure” for her parents’ death, only to find The Mean One hasn’t lost his murderous thirst, or urge “to carve the roast beast.”

The film, set for a Dec. 15 release, stars “Terrifier 2” star David Howard Thornton as The Mean One and “The Sandra West Diaries” actress Krystle Martin as Cindy You-Know-Who.

When Will Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey Be Released

The general public first learned of “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” around May of 2022, at which point filming had already wrapped according to an early profile that Variety published around that time. The “Blood and Honey” team, it turns out, was able to conclude filming in just 10 days. Fittingly, the project was filmed near the Ashdown Forest located on the outskirts of East Sussex, England, which once served as inspiration for the Hundred Acre Wood in which “Winnie-the-Pooh” takes place. Then, after receiving positive responses to early still photos of “Blood and Honey,” its creators decided to expedite its release in order to make the most of the growing momentum behind it.

As a result of this quick turnaround, “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” will hit theaters in the United States on February 15, 2023, albeit with a caveat “Blood and Honey” will premiere as a single-day theatrical engagement, so those interested in catching it in theaters will have to plan to see it that very day. “Blood and Honey” will also screen in the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico and some additional countries, though whether or not it will remain in theaters for a longer period of time worldwide has yet to be announced.

As its creators have specified throughout the film’s making, “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” is a decidedly independent production, so its cast is largely comprised not of marquee names but actors whose past experience consists predominately of other independent horror projects.

Craig David Dowsett stars in “Blood and Honey” as the titular Winnie-the-Pooh. Dowsett’s past work is limited to a single horror film, titled “The Area 51 Incident,” likewise helmed by the director of “Blood and Honey.” Meanwhile his partner in crime Piglet is portrayed by Chris Cordell, whose filmography spans a handful of horror projects through 2021 and 2022, also including “The Area 51 Incident.” Rounding out its stable of legacy characters is another relative newcomer, Nikolai Leon, as Christopher Robin.

Milnes original Winnie-the-Pooh book has finally lapsed into the public domain, being one of the most culturally relevant stories to have broken free of copyright recently. Disney has retained control over the franchise for several decades, ever since adapting the original books into animated films.

But these days, the Hundred Acre Wood has been relatively quiet, as the most recent Winnie the Pooh animated movie was released in 2011, and the live-action Christopher Robin released in 2018 however, Disney still releases a steady stream of shows, books and merchandise featuring Pooh and friends.
