Smartwatch That Measures Blood Pressure

The 6 Best Smart Watches With A Blood Pressure Monitor

An inflatable Blood Pressure Smartwatch? And it’s Accurate!

As smartwatches continue to grow increasingly sophisticated, more and more people are looking for watches with the ability to measure blood pressure.

Its an understandable search. Blood pressure is a basic but important piece of medical information, and from a distance it looks like it shouldnt be that hard to measure.

However, many high-end smartwatches dont include this capability, which to some extent reflects the mania to keep adding fitness-oriented features.

There are some exceptions, though, so lets take a more in-depth at what some of them are. You may not have heard of a few of these brands, but they will give you what you need if youre looking for blood pressure monitoring capability, and at a fairly decent price at that.

The Top 2

There are two fairly obvious choices when it comes to choosing the best smartwatches from this crew of watches with blood pressure monitors the MorePro and the Aikela.

The big attraction of the MorePro is the price. Smartwatches with a good array of fitness features tend to be expensive, so if you want something less pricey the MorePro is the way to go.

If youre after simplicity, the Aikela is a great choice. Youll have to squint some when it comes to the accuracy of some of the data you get, but the price point will make it worth the effort.

Build Quality And Comfort

After wearing the tracker for a number of weeks, I havent noticed any scuffs or scratches. It still looks brand new. Its comfortable to wear and has a slim profile that isnt conspicuous on the wrist. The band is adjustable for smaller and larger wrists. Only people with very small or very large wrist may run into a problem.

The color screen turns on with a twist of the wrist, such as when you turn your wrist towards your face to see the tracker. This can be turned off or you can specify what hours you want this turned on. For instance, I have mine set for tilt to wake from 5 am to 11:30 PM. That way the screen isnt turning on everytime I move my arm in bed which can be really annoying.

The screen is difficult to read in bright sunlight. Youll have to shade the screen to read it. This is typical of such displays. It would be great if the screen became brighter in brighter conditions automatically but it doesnt have this feature.

Overall, for the price its a nice looking tracker that doesnt look or feel cheap.

Omron HeartGuide World’s First Blood Pressure Smartwatch, Omron Complete Blood Pressure with EKG

Continuous heart rate tracking, stress, and sleep monitoring, period tracking, and 5ATM water resistance also feature. Theres a , too a definite win for the Bip U at its price point.

However, these are packed into a cheap, flimsy body while the usual Amazfit issue of nonexistent app support also drags down the Bip Us prospects. Do I Really Need To Track Blood Pressure

Blood pressure monitor wristwatches show great potential, but they are not perfect. To be specific, the Omron Heart Guide is expensive and bulky. At the same time, others do not have FDA clearance or approval for use as a medical device. The recent cheaper alternatives on the market may offer some solutions but may not be exactly what you need. So, are wearable blood pressure monitoring smartwatches worth the money?

Well, it depends on how important BP tracking is to you. Certainly, you could overlook these snags if BP tracking is high on your list of priorities. People living with chronic stress or illness will probably benefit from one of these watches. Monitoring blood pressure can be quite useful for some. But if this doesnt apply to you a wearable BP fitness tracker may be unnecessary.

In fact, many people believe that cheaper fitness trackers are sufficient for tracking health. To be specific, most mid-range trackers measure resting heart rate . RHR gives a good indication of overall cardiovascular health. Although, as mentioned, people with a good RHR arent necessarily immune to high blood pressure.

Ask yourself how important BP monitoring is. If its fairly low on your list of requirements, other fitness trackers offer better a better fit for purpose.

Best Value Blood Pressure Watch

  • Battery life: 3 to 10 days
  • Waterproof: yes

This fitness and sleep tracker takes blood pressure and heart rate readings, which are stored in a companion app. In online reviews, some users say its remarkably reliable, especially for an inexpensive watch.

Pros: It includes a heart rate alarm feature and a fatigue test. Other interesting features include an alert system that tells you to stand up when youve been sitting for too long. Even though this watch is priced for a smaller budget, its waterproof. You can choose from several different color bands according to your preference. No wires are required to charge on the wireless charging station.

Cons: This watch isnt the most stylish of the bunch, and no one is going to mistake it for a regular watch. The display is meant to be easy to read, but the screen is a bit small. There doesnt seem to be any warranty available for this watch, though you can purchase a replacement strap if it breaks.

  • Battery life: 5 days
  • Waterproof: some water resistance

Cons: The MorePro Activity Tracker isnt a medical device, so its not subject to FDA approval to back up its claims. This is more of a device for tracking your overall health, not necessarily the best or most accurate blood pressure measurement that you can get. The display is quite small, so it wont be easy for everyone to read.

Smartwatch Blood Pressure Sensor Technology Is Getting Close

Blood pressure tracking capabilities on Apple Watches have been a long-awaited feature, and the technology to make it happen appears to be in the works.

The sensor-making company Apple partners with for its smartwatch sensors, Rockley Photonics, recently announced that initial tests of its photonics-based sensor could measure blood pressure non-invasively when worn on the wrist.

“Following the recent success of our core body temperature studies, the results of our pilot blood pressure study using wrist-based measurement are extremely encouraging,” Dr. Hooman Abediasl, senior vice president of product engineering at Rockley, said in a statement. “These positive results represent a huge step forward in validating our sensing solution and its ability to deliver powerful multi-biomarker functionality in a highly manufacturable wearable form factor.”

Rockley’s blood pressure study was conducted using a laser-based approach and advanced algorithms. Signals produced by sensors were compared with signals produced simultaneously and location by an off-the-shelf photoplethysmography module, the same technology used by most wearables available today. The signals from the Rockley sensor provided a stronger correlation with the control blood pressure readings from a cuff than standard PPG signals.

What Is The Origin Of Pulse Oximetry

The earliest oxygen saturation meter is thought to date from the 1930s when researchers investigated light transmission through skin and the data it may offer.

During the 1960s and 1970s, people saw pulse oximeter devices evolve into the ones currently used in hospitals and may be purchased to perform those measures at home. Due to its massive size, Hewlett Packard was the first firm to develop an ear oximeter, primarily utilized in clinical sleep laboratories.

Are These Really The Best Blood Pressure Watches

The best blood pressure monitor will always be an FDA-approved or cleared medical device. A smartwatch will always be an alternative. When considering all the fitness watches offer, a balance must be found between your budget and expectations.

Wearable blood pressure watches have a lot to offer. However, always consider them to quickly obtain information about your blood pressure and not as a clinical device.

In case of doubts, the data will still have to be taken with a grain of salt. Always consult your doctor, pharmacist, or other healthcare professionals if your blood pressure needs extra monitoring.

Indirect Blood Measure Measurement

A traditional monitor measures blood pressure by sensing the pressure exerted by blood on an artery. Thats what is happening when the cuff tightens and then relaxes around your arm.

Smartwatches and fitness trackers, on the other hand, gather other biological data from your body and use that to approximate your blood pressure.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active, as well as the Samsung Note 9, S9, S9+, S10, and S10+ smartphones, for example, can measure something called pulse transit time, which is how long it takes a pressure wave created by a heartbeat to travel between two points along an artery.

Importantly, pulse transit time on its own can only provide you with relative percentage changes in your blood pressure from measurement to measurement. To come up with an absolute blood pressure reading, you first have to establish a baseline by using a standard blood pressure cuff and entering the data into the device. That calibrates the device to your bodys norms and allows it to provide you with blood pressure readings expressed in the familiar ratio of systolic to diastolic blood pressure measured in millimeters of mercury .

Other products that use optical sensors to gather biological data used to estimate blood pressure include BioBeat and Heartisans smartwatches, both of which also require calibration with a traditional cuffed monitor, similar to My BP Lab.
