All mammals can carry rabies, but it’s most common in:

Animals can spread the infection if they bite or scratch you or, or in rare cases, if they lick an open wound or their saliva gets into your mouth or eyes.

The Dangers Of Scratches

Things became more worrisome when I researched the topic and found out that dog scratches could be almost as dangerous as dog bites, yikes!

Just like dog bites, any time the skin is broken there are risks for bacteria to set in and cause dangerous infections. Not to mention, dog scratches can also transmit rabies, if the circumstances are right. If the dog isn’t vaccinated for rabies and he has managed to recently lick his paws, rabies can be transmitted this way. This may not be very common, but it’s scary nonetheless!

On a side note, now I knew why, back when working for a veterinarian, before euthanasia appointments, rabies law required us to ask dog owners whether their dogs had bitten or scratched somebody in the last 10 days.

So yes, dog scratches shouldn’t be underestimated. If you are ever scratched by a dog, clean the area with mild soap and apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream to the wound once it is clean, dry, and no longer bleeding.

Then, keep the area protected from exposure to more germs for the first 24 to 48 hours, suggests veterinarian Dr.

So if you have a dog who greets people too enthusiastically or who likes to paw at people, you may want to address this behavior at your earliest convenience.

Long and sharp nails can cause deeper scratches.

How To Stop This Behavior

Loosely Attached Cracked Or Broken Nail

If you do happen to find a nail that is very loose and dangling, then you can attempt to remove it at home. Be sure to have someone help restrain your dog safely while you gently try to remove the nearly broken off nail with a quick pull motion. Caution: only attempt removal if the nail is very loose! Think âloose wiggly toothâ like when you were a kid.

Also, be careful during your inspection or attempt to remove a loose nail as this can cause a sudden and unpleasant pain sensation in which some dogs may nip or bite in surprise. If bleeding is noted following the removal, you can then use some gauze, light pressure, and/or Kwik Stop.

Treating Dog Bites And Cat Scratches

Some physicians have found cat scratch fever in patients complaining of fatigue, swollen glands, and flu-like symptoms. Sometimes a minor cat claw scratch can set off an allergic reaction or an infection, which causes the lymph glands to swell and creates flu-like problems. The symptoms of cat scratch fever usually do not last more than one week. If the symptoms last more than a week or worsen, contact a physician. If you have a fever, chills, or red streaks on your skin, you may need an oral antibiotic.

What Is The Care For Animal Bites

For superficial bites from a familiar household pet that is immunized and in good health:

• Wash the wound with soap and water under pressure from a faucet for at least 5 minutes, but do not scrub, as this may bruise the tissue. Apply an antiseptic lotion or cream.

• Watch for signs of infection at the site, such as increased redness or pain, swelling, drainage, or if the person develops a fever. Call your healthcare provider right away if any of these symptoms happen.

• If possible, locate the animal that inflicted the wound. Some animals need to be captured, confined, and observed for rabies. Do not try to capture the animal yourself. Contact the nearest animal warden or animal control office in your area.

• If the animal cannot be found or is a high-risk species , or the animal attack was unprovoked, the victim may need a series of rabies shots and a dose of rabies immunoglobulin.

• Use sharp pet nail trimmers that are specially designed to cut pet nails. Dull trimmers tend to crush the nail and cause pain even if you are not in the quick.

• You should always have styptic powder available and nearby for nail trims in case your dogs nail starts bleeding. This is available under different brand names, such as Kwik Stop and Remedy + Recovery.

Potential Infections Can Occur From A Dog Scratch

Dogs walk on all four feet and dig in whatever they can find, which means dog nail beds are very dirty. Cat Bites Or Scratches

Symptoms

• A cat’s jaws aren’t as strong as a dog’s, but its teeth are sharper. If your baby has been bitten by a cat, you may notice deep puncture wounds on his skin. A cat bite can penetrate bones and joints.
• There may be scratches from cat claws around the wound and on other parts of your child’s body.
• In adults, most cat bites are to the upper limbs, particularly the fingers and hands. But in children, the face and neck can also be bitten.
