American Red Cross Facing Historic Blood Donation Crisis
- https://twspr.wordpress.com/2022/01/30/american-red-cross-facing-historic-blood-donation-crisis/
- The Red Cross attributes much of the decrease to low donor turnout in response to the Delta and Omicron variants, staffing limitations and blood drive cancellations. One donor demographic that has seen a sharp decline in participation is student donors , who went from making up a quarter of the donor pool in 2019 to only 10% in 2021.

Red Cross Asking For Blood Donations This Fall
The Red Cross announced their first ever blood emergency status in over twenty years over the summer.
The American Red Cross is asking for the public to donate blood this fall.
“The American Red Cross, as well as some of our other blood banking partners, we experienced that typical, slow down and blood donations,” said JoAnn Woody, the Executive Director of Greater Kansas City. “And so that makes increasing our blood donations coming into fall much more critical and much more important to, to really encourage our donors to get out and donate.”
The Red Cross announced their first ever blood emergency status in over twenty years over the summer.
“It’s looking much better, we hope that we don’t get back into that very critical piece that we saw over the summer, where we actually declared a bloody emergency,” said Woody. “We’re really hoping that we don’t face that again. But certainly, we’re we’re working hard to prepare for that.”
One piece of the puzzle that is making it’s return are blood drives. Woody said schools and businesses took a two-year pause hosting blood drives and is starting to see them return.
“We are starting to see more engagement with our school sites,” Woody explained. “Again, as things are opening up, obviously, many of our school partners were very hesitant to, you know, open their doors to a broader audience. But, you know, we’re really excited to see some of that starting back up again.”

Kentucky Blood Center Offering Donors Chance To Help With Flood Relief Efforts
Donors can help blood supply and KBC will make $5 donation to flood relief in Eastern Kentucky
LEXINGTON, Ky. Kentucky Blood Center is offering local donors with the chance to double their impact this week. Donors can visit any KBC donor center or mobile blood drive between Aug. 10-17 to boost the critically low blood supply and help our neighbors in Eastern Kentucky. If a donor chooses to pass on their KBC thank you T-shirt, the blood center will make a $5 donation to flood relief efforts being made by the Pikeville Medical Center Foundation and the ARH Foundation.
Kentucky Blood Center serves hospitals throughout Kentucky, including many hospitals in the areas impacted by last weeks record flooding and devastation. The nonprofit and its employees quickly banded together to provide $15,000 worth of assistance by way of financial contributions and a large delivery of supplies to help with recovery efforts. The community organization is now offering its donor base with the chance to contribute.
Our hearts are hurting for our neighbors, and this disaster has impacted many members of our team in one way or another, said Bill Reed, president and CEO of Kentucky Blood Center. We know that many folks want to do something to help and this is a great way to help those impacted by the flooding while also helping provide an ample supply of blood as we continue to see a decline in donations and increased use of blood at hospitals throughout Kentucky.

Useful For Rapidpass Only
Its great for saving time by being able to answer all the questions via RapidPass before going to donate. It could be useful for other things but so much about the app seems off or unnecessary. The digital donor card would be great for me to show a history of BP readings. Unfortunately, it shows only the last three readings, and if you have it show the full history, the only information shown is the type of donation, date, and location . Consistency of information would be good here. The Blood Journey is interesting but would be more so with a little more information and if it were more up to date . And although I figured out that the Blood Journey is showing the donations in reverse chronological order, why isnt the full date displayed? Most other informational features are unnecessary once youve donated once or twice, and the badges are lame. Im a Power Red donor so only need to use this three times a year, so instead of bogging down my phone I use it on my iPad. Only got it for the benefit of seeing the Blood Journey, and have been waiting to see some improvements but have yet to be rewarded. I may just forgo the little information I do get about the Blood Journey and just go back to using RapidPass on the website.
