Sometimes, during a normal menstruation, you can see those clots. Why? Because of that thick lining of your uterus breaks away, and as you menstruate, anticoagulants are released that break down thick menstrual blood before they leave your body. Well, during a very heavy flow, blood is expelled faster and thats when the clots form. So, usually it is nothing, but just in case if this happens to you all the time, you should do some tests. I really don’t want to scare you, but sometimes this can be a reason for concern, and that means that easily you can deal with some health issue.

What Are Heavy Periods

The amount of blood lost during a period varies a lot between women. This makes it difficult to give a general description of heavy periods. The amount of blood lost can also vary at different times in your life, including if you have had surgery or take medication. However, most women have a good idea of how much bleeding is normal for them during their period and can tell when this changes.

A good indication that your periods are heavy is if you:
  • lose more than 56 tablespoons of blood
  • pass clots that are larger than a 50 cent coin
  • bleed so much that you have to change your pad/tampon every hour
  • have to get up most nights to change your pad/tampon
  • have to put a towel in your bed or use large maternity pads when you sleep
  • bleed through clothing
  • have bleeding that lasts more than 8 days .

Heavy periods can lead to a drop of iron levels and red blood cells. This means you may feel tired more easily, feel weak or dizzy or be short of breath and have chest pains.

Stringy Blood Clots During Period Should You Be Concerned

Its only natural that blood clots sound scary, but they can actually be rather good on many occasions. For instance, when we get injured, blood cells coagulate in order to form a blood clot that will prevent further bleeding and protect the wound. When it comes to period blood, jelly-like blood clots during the period usually consist of all kinds of tissues such as dead cells, coagulated blood, parts of the uterine lining, etc. Now, sticky period blood and skin-like discharge during the period can indicate heavier flow, but they are completely natural. However, constant heavier flow can mean that theres a more serious underlying issue. That said, its important to inform yourself more on the matter so that you can act and react accordingly.

In most cases, jelly-like clots during the period are a perfectly normal part of menstruation. Small and even stringy blood clots during the period may not be a reason for concern at all, especially if the clots dont show up larger than a dime during the period of the heaviest flow, and you dont feel any unusual discomfort. The color of these blood clots can also vary from one person to another and from one day in the cycle to another and go from light to very dark red.

Whats Considered A Heavy Period

TMI/GRAPHIC NEED ADVICE JUST PASSED THIS HUGE SOLID/JELLO BLOOD CLOT ...

You might be surprised to learn that about one in five women experience menorrhagia, the medical term for heavy periods. Because each womans period is unique, it can be tricky to know if what you think is normal for your cycle is actually excessive bleeding. In fact, half of women who experience menorrhagia dont realize they have it.

While the best way to know if your heavy periods are chronic is to talk to a doctor, you can keep an eye out for some common symptoms of menorrhagia.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, any of the following is considered a symptom of heavy bleeding:

  • Bleeding for more than seven days
  • Blood soaks through one or more tampons or pads every hour
  • You need to change your pad or tampon during the night
  • You need to double up on protection to keep from leaking
  • The blood clots in your flow are the size of a quarter or larger

Liking Fibroids And Menstruation

Studies show that fibroids have hormone receptors that allow them to bind to estrogen and progesterone molecules. Both of these hormones fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. Estrogen levels, for example, are highest during the first half of the cycle, when it helps grow the uterine lining in preparation for a fertilized egg.

Progesterone helps balance the effects of estrogen and dominates the second half of menstruation. It is responsible for maintaining the uterine lining if a woman becomes pregnant. Levels drop when pregnancy does not occur, prompting the uterus to shed its lining and menstruation to begin.

What Is A Prognosis

Prognosis is a prediction or estimate of the chance of recovery or survival from a disease.

Survival estimates are based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results databasewhich classifies cancer by how much or little it has spread throughout the body.

This is, of course, an estimatesome people live much longer than estimated.

Do All Women Get Period Blood Clots

In short, no. It really depends on individual chemistry and whether they have a heavy or light period, Wysocki says. And you might not always get them, either it isnt unusual to experience clots sporadically throughout your years of menstruation. Interestingly enough, you might notice period clots during the first and last years of your period. Its not unusual for women to have heavy, heavy bleeding during puberty, which could likely involve clotting, Wysocki says.

On the other end of the spectrum are perimenopausal women, whose ovulation and menstruation are beginning to occur further apart . When you finally do start bleeding at that stage, your periods may be heavier than youre used to and contain period blood clots.

The Least Common Type Of Fibroid

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding and Available Treatment for Teens

Submucosal fibroids are the least common type of uterine fibroid and typically develop just under the lining of the uterine cavity.

If submucosal fibroid tumors become large enough, they can block the entrance to the fallopian tubes which can cause complications with fertility.

While submucosal fibroids may enlarge the uterine cavity, they are not always symptomatic, but they can impact womens fertility.

When symptoms do appear, they can be severe, with women often citing heavier and more prolonged menstrual bleeding as the most common symptoms.

If left untreated, complications such as anemia and fatigue may ensue, which could potentially lead to a future need for blood transfusions.

What Is A Normal Period

What’s normal for you may not be what textbooks define as a “normal” period. Generally speaking, though, a period is considered normal if it:

  • Comes anywhere between every 24 day to 38 days
  • Varies as much as 20 days over the course of the year
  • Lasts between four-and-a-half to eight days
  • Includes between 5 milliliters and 80 ml of blood

Reasons For Blood Clots During Period

Every month the uterus prepares a thick lining of tissues for the zygote , which later turns into a fetus. When sperm fertilizes an egg, it forms a zygote in the uterus. When fertilization does not happen, this lining is shed in blood. This causes periods in women every month. Some may even experience thick clumps along with the blood.

The reason behind this clot is to save the body from excessive blood loss due to heavy flow proteins in the blood coagulate to form thick clots or fleshy tissues during the period. This is why many experience menstrual bleeding with clots.

Period Blood Clots: Whats Normal & Whats Not

Finding a clot in your tampon, pad, menstrual cup or menstrual disc does not mean you need to rush to your doctors office. Normal period clots are:

  • Smaller than a quarter
  • Occasional and usually on heavier days
  • Bright red or dark red
  • Blackish, especially if theyre larger
  • Brown, especially later in your cycle

That said, sometimes, period clots can be a symptom of another condition. Look out for period clots that are:

  • Frequently larger than a quarter
  • Accompanied by heavier-than-usual menstrual bleeding
  • Grayish and/or happening when you think you could be pregnant
  • Accompanied by lots of pain that isnt normal for your period
  • Accompanied by anemia or easy bruising2

At times, clots can form for other reasons including certain underlying health conditions. Knowing whats normal for you will help you decide whether or not you should see a healthcare provider. When in doubt, it never hurts to make a quick call.

What Health Conditions Cause Larger Period Blood Clots

Even though a variety of health conditions may cause period clots larger than quarter-size, they usually have other characteristics that give them away.

This hormonal disorder can cause incredibly heavy periods, according to the Mayo Clinic,6 because the hormone imbalance involved can prevent you from menstruating for some time. When your period does finally arrive, you may have accumulated many months worth of tissue. PCOS can cause irregular periods , hormonal acne, male-pattern baldness, and excess facial or body hair. Research suggests the condition is also associated with metabolic complications, increasing the risk of conditions like type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.7 If your doctor suspects your symptoms are due to PCOS, they may recommend a physical exam, a pelvic exam, blood tests, or an ultrasound to confirm a diagnosis.

At this point the general medical consensus is that endometriosis happens when the tissue that lines your uterus begins to grow on other organs. However, some experts believe there may be other causes behind endometriosis, as SELF previously reported. One theory is that people with endometriosis grow misplaced tissue that is similar to the endometrium, but that it responds differently to hormones. No matter the cause of endometriosis, frighteningly heavy bleeding is one possible symptom.8

An Overview With Insights Into The Effect On Black Women

Monique Rainford, MD, is board-certified in obstetrics-gynecology, and currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Yale Medicine. She is the former chief of obstetrics-gynecology at Yale Health.

This article is part of Uterine Fibroids and Black Women, a destination in our Health Divide series.

Uterine fibroidsalso known as leiomyomasare fairly common. These growths are benign and they may be asymptomatic , or they can cause symptoms ranging from pelvic/abdominal discomfort to irregular bleeding to pregnancy issues.

No group is hit harder by uterine fibroids than Black women. Not only are Black women three times more likely than women of other races to develop fibroids, but they are more likely to get them earlier in life and develop symptoms.

As a result, symptomatic fibroids lower the quality of life for many Black women by causing pain, compromising the ability to get pregnant, and increasing the likelihood of serious medical complications like anemia.

In addition, Black women are two times more likely to undergo hysterectomy and nearly seven times more likely to undergo uterine-sparing myomectomy.

Very Large Blood Clots Is It Normal Sometimes

No. If you experience very large blood clots during your period, then you should book an appointment with your doctor. Very large blood clots may be due to

  • Fibroid if less than 40 years
  • Cancer or endometrial thickening if you are more than 40 years

Now its your turn. Do you have prolonged bleeding with clots? Let us know if we can help.

The Consistency Of Your Period

What does it mean if my menstrual blood is brown?

Stringy blood clots during the period and sticky period blood dont have to be alarming as this kind of consistency usually just means that the uterus is ejecting the clot. Also, blood clots that are no bigger than a dime are completely normal. After all, keep in mind that the body has to discard the entire uterus lining and your period blood is precisely the mix of the lining tissues, vaginal fluid, and blood.

Stringy blood clots during the period that show as long strands of sticky period blood mean that the concentration of the discarded uterine lining is at its highest. At this point, the blood goes from bright to dark red.

Its highly possible youll notice jelly-like blood clots during the period from then on. And these clots can show up to the very last days of your period, even when the flow subsides. You might even see skin-like discharge during the period, which all usually points to these clumps of the last bits of the uterine lining leaving your body.

When it comes to consistency, stringy, jelly, sticky, and similar all fall under the normal category. However, if you notice watery consistency with fresh, bright red blood, this could be alarming and point to an injury or even a miscarriage. Call your gynecologist in Florida, or another place of residence, if your period blood is suspiciously watery and clear.

Menstrual Clots And Heavy Periods

The normal menstrual cycle lasts 25 to 32 days. A normal flow lasts between four and seven days and may be accompanied by blood clots. A normal period should normally cause mild to moderate discomfort beginning the first day and then subside.

A period is considered heavy if it soaks through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours or if it lasts for over seven days. Large clots in period blood are also considered signs of heavy periods. Moreover, heavy periods can cause constant pain in the lower abdomen.

Heavy menstrual bleeding can negatively affect a womans quality of life and lead to other conditions such as anemia where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells that can carry oxygen to different organs and tissues in the body. Anemia can make a person feel weak and tired.

Very Heavy Menstrual Flow

When periods are very heavy or you are experiencing flooding or passing big clots you have what doctors call menorrhagia. The purpose of this article is to define normal and very heavy menstrual bleeding, to explain what causes heavy flow, and to show what you yourself can do in dealing with heavy flow.

Period Clots: When You Should Be Concerned

Its important to remember that normal is a relative term for everyone, Christine Greves, M.D.,5 a board-certified ob-gyn at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies, tells SELF. If your usual is to pass occasional larger clots, then that may simply be your usual, as long as you are not anemic and your quality of life is not affected, she explains.

Meaning, if youve always had one period clot that youre tempted to take a photo of or pester your best friend about every month, but you otherwise feel okay and arent soaking through tampons or pads like its your job, its probably nothing to be too stressed about. Still, Dr. Greves says, its not a bad idea to bring it up during your next checkup with your ob-gyn, just to get their take. And, remember, if youre bleeding heavily, are in pain, or have any other symptoms of menorrhagia, you should get it addressed sooner rather than later.
