Life Expectancy With Controlled High Blood Pressure

What Are The Complications That Arise From High Blood Pressure

Study Shows High Blood Pressure Affects Life Expectancy

High blood pressure can cause multiple health issues. It is often referred to as the silent killer as it generally doesnt display any early symptoms or warning signs. When combined with diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity or smoking, high blood pressure can be life threatening.

High blood pressure spikes up the hearts workload by making the heart pump harder and channelize more blood through the arteries. If this over pumping prolongs, the functioning of the arteries, heart and other vital organs of the body, like the kidneys, gradually deteriorates under this stress and strain. Moreover, this extra workload causes the heart to enlarge and over enlargement of the heart negatively affects its performance.

Ageing causes the arteries to harden and high blood pressure accelerates this process. These hardened and narrowed arteries are less capable of effectively delivering the essential nutrients and oxygen to the organs. This negatively impacts the functioning and performance of these organs. High blood pressure also increases the risk of developing blood clots in the arteries. High blood pressure can increase the risk of health ailments like heart attack, kidney failure, stroke and heart failure by many folds.

Types Of Blood Pressure Medicines

There are four main types of medicine to lower blood pressure.

  • . ACE inhibitors help to control hormones that play a role in blood pressure control. They help the blood vessels to relax and widen, lowering blood pressure. Most have names that end in pril, for example, enalapril, lisinopril, perindopril and Ramipril.
  • . These work in a similar way to ACE inhibitors, controlling the hormones that affect blood pressure, so you probably wont take ACE inhibitors and ARBs at the same time. Theyre usually used if ACE inhibitors are causing side effects. Most have names that end in artan, for example, candesartan, irbesartan, losartan, valsartan and olmesartan.
  • . These allow the artery walls to relax, making them wider. This allows more blood to pass through, lowering blood pressure. Most have names that end in pine , for example, amlodipine, felodipine and nifedipine.
  • . These are sometimes known as water pills because they remove excess fluid from the body, including from the blood. This means there is less pressure on the blood vessel walls. Most have names that end in ide, for example, indapamide and bendroflumethiazide.

Sometimes these medications wont be suitable, for example if youre pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have certain other health problems, or youre taking other medications which could react with them.

Alternatively, you might need to take another type of medication as well to lower your blood pressure enough.

Taking Blood Pressure Meds Helps Even Frailest People Live Longer

Please note: This article was published more than two years ago, so some information may be outdated. If you have questions about your health, always contact a health care professional.

Even the frailest people 65 and older live longer if they take blood pressure medication as prescribed compared to peers who don’t, according to new research.

The study, which showed the healthiest older people who took their meds had the biggest survival boost, looked at public health care data on nearly 1.3 million people in the Lombardy region of northern Italy who had prescriptions for three or more high blood pressure medications in 2011-2012. Their average age was 76.

“We knew that high blood pressure medication was protective in general among older people. However, we focused on whether it is also protective in frail patients with many other medical conditions who are usually excluded from randomized trials,” lead study author Dr. Giuseppe Mancia said in a news release. He is professor emeritus at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Milan.

In the study, published Monday in the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension, researchers calculated adherence to medication by determining the percentage of time over seven years that each person was dispensed prescriptions from Italy’s public health service, which provides almost all of them for free or at a low cost.

What Should You Know About Your High Blood Pressure As You Age

6 Health Consequences of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can result from aging because, as we get older, it’s common for our arteries to stiffen, which raises blood pressure even among exceptionally healthy individuals.

Not having developed hypertension by the time you reach your forties or fifties does not guarantee you will never get it. High blood pressure is very prevalent, especially as you age.

Intensive Blood Pressure Control May Extend Life In Adults With Hypertension

A patient at age 65 with high blood pressure could extend their life by more than a year with intensive treatment focused on a target systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg.

A 50-year old patient with high blood pressure could expect to live almost 3 years longer with more intensive blood pressure control that is focused on a target systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg, according to a study presented at the American Heart Associations Scientific Sessions 2019 in Philadelphia, PA.1

Globally, an estimated 1.13 billion individuals have hypertension, which causes about 13% of all deaths, according to the World Health Organization. Almost 1000 individuals in the United States die each day with high blood pressure as a primary or contributing cause, according to data from the CDC. Most of the time there are no obvious symptoms, but certain physical traits and lifestyle choices can put patients at a greater risk.2

Lead study author Muthiah Vaduganathan, MD, MPH, an instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate physician at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, said that preventative techniques such as blood pressure control are important steps to prolong a patients life free from disease or disability.2

Ways To Keep Blood Pressure In Check And Live Longer

The life expectancy for high blood pressure patients depends upon many factors like their current health and their seriousness towards proper health care. Doctors recommend a number of dietary and lifestyle changes in order to keep blood pressure in control. Eating a healthy and nutritious diet containing optimum amounts of whole grain, fruits and vegetables and consuming moderate amounts of salt everyday is extremely important to regulate blood pressure. Exercising regularly, maintaining a normal body weight, limiting the alcohol intake and refraining from smoking also prove to be helpful in keeping blood pressure in check.

Regular professional assessment of blood pressure is highly recommended for blood pressure patients. However, blood pressure can be monitored at home too by the patients and then the log of the regular readings can be provided to the doctor on their next visit. One should ensure that the equipment being used to check the blood pressure is of good quality and purchased with the permission and advice of the healthcare provider. It should always be remembered that home treatment is not a substitute for regular professional evaluation.

With these new guidelines, it is estimated that about 14 percent of people will now be classified as having hypertension many of those individuals may be younger. However, only a small percentage will require intervention by medication. Individuals who now fall into a hypertensive category will receive more aggressive prevention interventions, like lifestyle changes.

Study Among First To Focus On Middle

To date, most studies linking high blood pressure to poor brain health have focused on older people. Researchers are only now coming to understand how the condition can affect brain health in those who are middle-aged or even youngerand how fast those changes set in.

The 316 men in the study had an initial assessment and returned to the clinic nearly six years later for brain imaging and further exams. Some of the men had normal blood pressure on both occasions. Others had high blood pressure at both visits and were classified as longer-duration cases. Others had developed hypertension only in the interimbetween visitsand were thus classified as shorter-duration cases.

Given the time frame of the study, the difference in duration between the short- and long-standing diagnoses was not greatonly around five years or less. The researchers say more years of follow-up might in fact reveal increasing damage with longer-standing hypertension.

In any case, they say the results “suggest that hypertension has widespread effects on brain white matter” that begin early in the course of the disease and “may not be easily reversible.”

Men In Study Are Part Of Larger Vietnam Registry

The 316 men taking part in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging are part of a larger group of volunteers who make up the Vietnam Twin Registry. The total registry contains data on some 7,000 middle-aged male twin pairs, all of whom served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. All the men served between 1964 and 1975.

Managed by VA’s Seattle-based Epidemiologic Research and Information Center, the registry is among the largest twin registries in the nation, with members in all 50 states. It was initially formed to help answer questions about the long-term health effects of service in Vietnam, but today it serves as a resource for studies on a wide range of mental and physical health conditions.

High Blood Pressure And Life Expectancy

How to get blood pressure under control

Effects: Hypertensive person suffers diseases almost seven years earlier than he/she is expected to do, which means he/she gets diseases seven years earlier than his/her fellows, who are not hypertensive. Average life expectancy of a person diminishes by 5 years for a hypertension tolerant.

Misconceptions: A health authority claims that hypertension is the primary root for the stroke, which is fatal. Mortal illnesses and diseases are also aggravated by the high blood pressure in a person. These consequences of hypertension are not realized by the people, who take high blood pressure very lightly and non-seriously.

Complications: Heart attack, diabetes, heart failure, hardening of the arteries, stroke and kidney damage are the dangerous outcomes of high blood pressure, apart from lower life expectancy.

    Prevention/solution:

Some unpretentious lifestyle changes can, not only reduce blood pressure and increase life expectancy of the person but may encourage others to do as well. These include: eating healthy food, such as fresh vegetables and fruits as well as low-fat foods reduce intake of alcohol, sodium, sweets giving up smoking and regular exercise.

Medical treatment: Beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and diuretics are known to be very beneficial drugs, used to treat high blood pressure, and are known to meaningfully proliferate life-expectancy of the patient.

    Analyses Of Potential Influencing Factors

Age, single/widowed/separated/divorced, overweight or obese, and family history of hypertension were positively related to hypertension , whereas, underweight, more vegetable and fruit intake, high fat diet, and current smoking had negative association . What’s more, those who were suffering from diabetes or dyslipidemia were more likely to have hypertension, whereas they also tended to be aware of treatment to control hypertension . More detailed descriptions concerning the potential risk factors of the awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension are revealed in Supplementary Figure 1.

    Bp Measurement And Categories

Baseline BP was measured by trained observers using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer on the right arm of seated participants after at least 5min of rest. Hypertension was defined as systolic BP140mmHg and/or diastolic BP90mmHg and/or taking antihypertensive medication. Participants with BP< 140mmHg and diastolic BP< 90mmHg were defined as normotensive. We further categorized the hypertensive participants, without regard to the use of antihypertensive medication, according to the classification by the JNC-7 as follows: stage 1 hypertension, systolic BP 140159mmHg and/or diastolic BP 9099mmHg, or stage 2 hypertension, systolic BP160mmHg and/or diastolic BP100mmHg. We decided not to consider treatment of hypertension in the categorization of our analyses because we wanted to evaluate the effect of increased BP levels, which can also arise in hypertensive patients under treatment. When the systolic and diastolic pressures fell into different categories, the higher category was selected for the purposes of classification.
