High Blood Sugar On Keto

Dawn Phenomenon And Somogyi Effect

Causes & Treatment For High Blood Sugar on Keto Diet Dr. Berg

In diabetics, there are 2 common ways that high fasting morning blood sugar arises. The first reason is the Dawn Phenomenon and this impacts individuals who are following a ketogenic lifestyle as well. Overnight as we sleep between the hours of 2-8am a slurry of hormones including cortisol, growth hormone, adrenaline and glucagon all begin to rise.

These hormones cause a gluconeogenesis effect where the liver and muscles break down their stored sugar to increase circulating blood sugar. This helps us have energy and mental arousal in the morning. This is a normal physiological response and it is normal for keto dieters to have slightly higher fasting blood sugaralthough it shouldnt be too high and you can mitigate this with the strategies discussed further on in this article.

Diabetics who are also taking exogenous insulin can also have something called the somogyi effect where they shoot too much insulin before bed and they have a blood sugar crash, followed by a huge increase in stress hormones that dramatically increases blood sugar through gluconeogenesis. This is obviously not an issue unless you are a type I or type II diabetic taking prescription insulin.

Prep & Serving Ideas For Sugar Snap Peas

Sugar snap peas can be enjoyed in so many ways, including with various seasonings and dishes.

Sugar Snap Peas Seasoning Ideas

Sweet in flavor, snap peas taste great on their own or with a touch of salt and pepper to taste. However, the peas can take on the flavors of a variety of seasonings such as:

Cumin Soy sauce

Stir-Fry the Snap Peas

While these sesame sugar snap peas can be enjoyed immediately chilled, they can also be stir-fried!

Stir-frying is a Chinese cooking technique done over high heat and with a small amount of oil. It is often used to stir-fry protein and veggies, also being a perfect cooking candidate for these snap peas!

Hereâs how to do it:

1. Prepare the snaps peas as detailed above. Whereas you can use uncooked peas, having them cooked and chilled limits the time needed to cook in the oil. This is ideal so the veggies do not overcook and become soggy, but crisp and vibrant instead.

2. Heat a large skillet or wok over medium to high heat. Once the pan is hot, add a tablespoon of vegetable oil with a high smoke point such as sesame or peanut oil.

3. Add the snap peas to the hot oil and shake and stir often, about 1 to 2 minutes.

4. Garnish with sea salt and sesame seeds as desired.

Serving Ideas

Being packed with protein and fiber, the sugar snap peas make an excellent snack option. However, they can also be served alongside or mixed into a variety of dishes.

Regardless of how you choose to enjoy, the recipe is sure to be enjoyed and made in a snap!

Improve Vitamin D Levels

A commonly overlooked aspect of blood sugar control is Vitamin D levels. Low Vitamin D levels are commonly associated with poor blood sugar control. It appears that supplementation with a high-quality Vitamin D supplement may help with elevated blood sugar in some individuals .

Increasing your exposure to the sun is also helpful for improving Vitamin D levels. Ideally, you would want your Vitamin D levels to fall between 60-100 ng/ml. In my experience, most individuals are well below this range unless they have taken active steps to improve their levels.

Low Carb Diet An Introduction

Diabetes Symtoms in 2020

Firstly it is essential to understand what a low-carb diet is. A low-carb diet is when you avoid the intake of carbohydrates in the form of sugary products like bread and other refined/processed carbs and opt for healthy alternatives like fruits, green vegetables, eggs, meat, nuts, seeds, and healthy oil and other non-starchy foods and foods with low GI to replenish your carbohydrate requirements.

Following a low-carb diet is very beneficial. It is advisable primarily for overweight people with health problems like diabetes and high blood sugar.

False Blood Glucose Readings

While the physiologic reasons as described above can cause higher glucose readings, technical reasons can cause them too. Home glucose monitors manufacturers are allowed a variance of 15% in results. This means that a reading of 100 mg/dl might actually be as low as 85 mg/dl or as high as 115 mg/dl . This really makes a huge difference. My advice is, if you get an unexpected result, take three more readings within a few minutes of each other. Then average the results.

A false reading can also be caused by finger pricking with hands that have traces of sugar or food. Dehydration equally raises results, too. Always wash your hands before testing. Be aware some soaps can have additives like honey or a fragrance that can distort readings. Strips that are too hot or too cold or other environmental conditions like high altitudes can equally produce higher or lower readings. Even different lots of strips can produce different results on the same meter.

So again, if you feel your reading is a little off, try again.

Insulin Low Significant Difference

As Dr. Nyman wrote recently, a fasting blood glucose measurement alone without a fasting insulin measurement doesnt tell us much. Two people can have exactly the same fasting blood sugar and totally different circulating insulin levels.

Its about the relationship between glucose and insulin and how they work together. This is called the homeostatic model of insulin resistance or HOMA-IR. The name is polysemous, but it simply means that the body is always trying to keep its basic systems in balance, which is called homeostasis. Insulin works against glucose and tries to keep blood sugar levels stable, i.e. in homeostasis.

In the case of one person e.g. B. in pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes or polycystic ovarian syndrome insulin may be administered in increasing amounts over a longer period of time to keep blood sugar levels relatively stable. Although blood sugar levels can remain within normal limits, increasing amounts of insulin are required to maintain them. When insulin resistance develops, that is, when insulin becomes less and less effective at lowering blood sugar, blood sugar levels eventually become too high.

In the second person the one who has been on a keto diet for several months and is now burning fat for energy the pancreas releases only a small amount of insulin to keep blood sugar stable. This means that you are no longer insulin resistant, but very sensitive to insulin and only need a small amount of insulin to control your blood sugar.

Third Step: Test Out Your Protein Threshold

High Blood Sugar on Keto? – Can keto reverse diabetes?

The threshold for protein is typically high, though anything in excess will lead towards energy storage. To find out if you are consuming too much protein at one meal, test your ketones and glucose in a fasted state and make note of it. Eat a meal and make note of how much protein is in that meal. If the protein amount is too high, we typically see a very gradual rise in glucose data through the CGM. This rise can occur anywhere from 2Â4 hours after a meal .

Good Carbs Vs Bad Carbs

Another reason why so many people push a low carb or keto diet is that some carbohydrates are bad for you, and people just write off carbs entirely.

Simple carbohydrates, like those in processed foods, added sugars, artificial syrups, and similar foods, will spike your blood sugar and don’t provide any nutritional value to your body. Most of the time, they’re converted into fat quickly, which can cause weight gain and actually lead to insulin resistance as well.

However, complex, natural carbohydrates like those found in whole fruits and vegetables, not only provide key nutrients that your body needs, but also are broken down much more slowly, giving your body the chance to process them effectively. These natural carbs are what we recommend as part of the diet for getting your blood sugar under control.

Does The Keto Diet Cause Dka

Following a keto diet does not necessarily cause DKA. A keto diet leads to ketosis when your body breaks down stored fat to convert it into energy. You might think that more ketones in your blood this would increase your risk of DKA. But, this ketosis doesnt lead to DKA if your pancreas is still producing insulin, or you inject the right amount of insulin for your diabetes, and your blood doesnt become acidic. But if you are considering a ketogenic diet you should speak to your diabetes team first .

With DKA, the blood becomes acidic when ketones build up and blood glucose levels are usually high because there is no insulin. If you want to lose weight while managing your diabetes our information might help you.

Does Keto Work If You Have Diabetes

Research suggests that people with type 2 diabetes can slim down and lower their blood sugar levels with the keto diet. In one study, people with type 2 lost weight, needed less medication, and lowered their A1c when they followed the keto diet for a year.

If youâre insulin resistant — which means you have higher blood sugar levels because your body isnât responding properly to the hormone insulin — you could benefit from nutritional ketosis, because your body will need and make less insulin.

There are fewer studies looking at the keto diet for people with type 1 diabetes. One small study found that it helped people with type 1 lower their A1c levels, but we need a lot more research to get the full picture of the dietâs effects.

Keep in mind that most studies have only looked at the short-term results of the keto diet. Itâs unclear if it works as a long-term way to manage your diabetes.

If you decide to try the keto diet, be aware that it may be hard to stick to. The very low amount of carbs in the plan is a big change for many people. It also can make you feel tired for a few weeks until your body adapts. To make it a success, itâs a good idea to make a meal plan you can follow, including keto-friendly meals and snacks to keep on hand.

Youre Eating Too Much Fat

The ketogenic diet is a big fan of healthy fats, but could too much fat could be hurting our blood glucose levels. Dr. Nikola Djordjevic, MD from MedAlertHelp.org explains that the general assumption of the ketogenic diet lowering blood glucose levels is only partially correct. Some individuals do experience high levels of glucose in their blood while on a ketogenic diet. The reason for this is that substituting fat for sugar isnt exactly sustainable over time, she explains. Whats important to understand is that the glucose in your blood is dependent on both carbohydrate and fat intake. According to Dr. Djordjevic, when you consume too much dietary fat, you can actually increase your insulin resistance. This results in high glucose levels in your blood and can lead to conditions such as high cholesterol. It can also increase your risk of developing chronic diseases.

While its true that cutting down on carbs will definitely help reduce glucose levels in the short term, says Dr. Djordjevic, I wouldnt recommend loading up on dietary fat in order to achieve ketosis, since, in the long-term, it can affect your insulin resistance and lead to more serious health conditions.

Moderate Amount Of Net Carbs

Snap Peas contain 5.92g of net carbs per 100g serving. You need to be mindful of their serving size because they have a fair amount of carbs.

It is important to limit its consumption so you wonât exceed the 20g â 30g daily net carb limit.

You can calculate your ideal daily net carb allowance by using this keto macros calculator. Then use the serving calculator below to determine a serving size that fits your net carb budget.

Second Step: Test Your Trigger Foods

To test your trigger foods you need to first record your pre-prandial ketone and glucose value. The best time to test this would be in a fasted state or at least three hours after a meal. Next, eat your experimental food choice. Two hours after your meal, record your postprandial ketone and glucose values. This will allow you to see how quickly your values recovered from your experimental food.

Once you complete the experiment check your results. We want a glucose delta of < 30. For ketones, we do not want ketones to drop > 1.0 mmol/L and we want it to return back to baseline within 2 hrs. If glucose and ketones are out of the ideal ranges, try retesting with a smaller portion.
