Smaller cuff and fewer storage slots than other monitors

It has a comfortable cuff thats easy to put on and fits on most arm sizes . This blood pressure machine also comes with a handy carrying bag that holds the monitor and its accessories. This is ideal for tossing in your bag for a doctor’s appointment or packing before a road trip.

The Greater Goods Bluetooth BP Monitor has all of the original BP monitors features but also comes with a Bluetooth connection. This means you can track your readings with a smartphone. It costs about $20 more than the non-Bluetooth edition.

How To Use A Blood Pressure Monitor

Take an accurate in-home blood pressure reading using digital blood pressure monitors by following the steps below:

  • Get ready. Make sure youre comfortable and relaxed. Your bladder should be empty, as a full one can impact the reading. Avoid smoking, exercise, and caffeine before taking your blood pressure.
  • Sit down. A comfortable sitting position is also the best position for taking a blood pressure reading. Remove any clothing that is tight or bulky around the upper arm, or roll up your sleeve. Place both feet on the floor and rest your forearm comfortably on a table at heart level. Place your arm with the palm of your hand facing up.
  • Find your pulse. Locate the brachial artery by finding your pulse in the center of your elbow. Press your index and middle fingers lightly against the inside of your elbow. If you cant find it by feeling, use the upper arm cuff to locate your pulse.
  • Use the right size of cuff. For an accurate reading, you need a blood pressure arm cuff that fits correctly. The length of the cuff should equal at least 80% of the circumference of your upper arm.
  • Apply the blood pressure cuff. Wrap the cuff around your upper arm . The lower edge of the cuff should be about one inch above the pit of your elbow. The arm cuff should feel snug, but not tight. If your blood pressure cuff has an arrow on it, make sure it points to the bend of your arm.
  • Systolic blood pressure should be on the left or the top of the screen.

An Overview On Blood Pressure Monitors

High blood pressure affects one in three Americans, yet many dont even realize they have it. Known as the silent killer, it can cause a sudden heart attack or stroke without any symptoms at all beforehand. If you have regular medical checkups, youll likely be tested before every visit. But for some people, at-home checks are critical to keeping it under control.

For that reason, home blood pressure monitors have become increasingly popular in recent years. As technology evolves, these monitors have grown far more sophisticated, interacting with smartphones and even allowing multiple people in the same household to store their own information.

BP monitors at home are to help give you feedback on your blood pressure and response to starting hypertension medications. However, the more important role is for you to keep a log of your pressures so that your doctor can get a sense of your BP control over several days, says Dr. Niket Sonpal, a gastroenterologist based in New York City.

There are more than bells and whistles to a blood pressure monitor. Accuracy is a top priority, but it can get confusing since many devices promise accurate results. One method some devices use is averaging, which takes multiple readings and gives you the average of all. Some monitors also use AM/PM averaging to help you keep an eye on your overall daily blood pressure readings. Dr. Sonpal also recommends getting it calibrated for accuracy at your doctors office.

How Accurate Are Blood Pressure Monitors For Home Use

Greater Goods Large Display & Upper Arm Cuff Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure monitors are considered accurate, with many doctors recommending them to their patients for home monitoring. Dr. Mysore suggested the following rule of thumb: if the systolic number is in the range of ten points from the reading done in the office, then your machine is deemed accurate.

Many of the doctors we spoke to also recommended patients use validatebp.org, which lists all devices that meet the American Medical Associations Validated Device Listing criteria all of the devices weve recommended here made the cut.

I Bought A Blood Pressure Monitor But The Cuff Is Too Small Can I Buy A Bigger Cuff Or Do I Need To Buy A Whole New Blood Pressure Monitor

Most blood pressure monitors come with a one-size-fits-most cuff for upper arms measuring 9.016.5 inches. Getting a blood pressure cuff that fits right is critical for accurate readings.

If your upper arm measures more than 16.5 inches around, you should get a bigger cuff. You can usually purchase extra cuffs separately, and most are compatible with various blood pressure machines. Just make sure your tubing is the correct size to connect with your monitor.

Which Is Better: An Upper Arm Or Wrist Monitor

The American Heart Association recommends upper arm monitors for the most accurate readings. Dr. Singh recommends wrist monitors only in the case of patients whose arms do not fit traditional arm cuffs.

Don Pham, MD, a cardiologist at Memorial Hermann Southeast in Houston, explains why wrist monitors are often not recommended. In general, the wrist monitors are more likely to report higher readings given the narrow vessels in the area and difficulty to position correctly, he says.

    How To Read Your Measurement

Blood pressure monitors often display three numbers: systolic pressure, diastolic pressure, and current heart rate. Blood pressure readings are presented as two numbers: systolic and diastolic. Systolic pressure tells you how much pressure your blood is putting on artery walls with each heartbeat. Diastolic pressurethe bottom numbertells you how much pressure blood is putting on artery walls at rest, in between beats.

While your doctor can provide more information about what readings you should expect, the American Heart Association has resources on what normal, elevated, and hypertension blood pressure levels look like. Healthy blood pressure is generally a measurement below 120/90 mmHg and above 90/60 mmHg.

    How The Cuff Should Fit

Proper cuff fit is vital to getting accurate measurements a cuff that is too loose or tight on your arm will lead to an inaccurate reading. To measure your arm for a cuff, youll want to measure the circumference of your mid-upper arm, about halfway between your elbow and shoulder. According to Target:BP, the cuffs lengthwhich wraps around the armshould be roughly 80 percent of your mid-upper arm measurement. For example, if your arm circumference is 40 cm, your cuff measurement is 32 cm. Cuffs often come in size ranges.

Blood Pressure Measurement Devices That Have Been Validated For Clinical Accuracy As Determined Through An Independent Review Process

    Greater Goods Pro

Uncontrolled high blood pressure is the leading risk factor for death and disability. The accurate measurement of BP is essential for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. One important aspect of accurate measurement is whether the BP measurement device has been validated for clinical accuracy.

To address this challenge, the American Medical Association enlisted the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago to assist in the design and management of an independent process to determine which BP devices available in the U.S. meet the AMAs established criteria to validate clinical accuracy Criteria). An Independent Review Committee comprised of physician experts in the BP field assesses whether a BP device satisfies the VDL Criteria for validation of clinical accuracy. This independent review process results in a formal list of BP devices that have been validated for clinical accuracy .

More information regarding the VDL Criteria, governance structure, and requirements for BP device manufacturers to submit device documentation to the Independent Review Committee can be found on the Validation page.

What To Do If Your Reading Is Inaccurate

Sometimes youll get a BP measurement that just doesnt make sense. This is fairly common, especially when youre new to home blood pressure monitoring.

If you didnt get an accurate reading, dont immediately re-inflate the blood pressure cuff. Remove the cuff and give yourself at least one minute before reapplying the cuff and repeating the steps to measure your blood pressure.

The American Heart Association recommends taking your new home blood pressure monitor with you to your next doctors appointment.4 You can ask questions, and your doctor can make sure youre using the monitor correctly.

You can also verify that your home monitor gets the same results as the equipment in your doctors office. Its good practice to bring in your home monitor at least once a year to make sure readings are still accurate.

    Types Of Blood Pressure Monitors

There are three primary types of blood pressure monitors: upper arm, finger, and wrist. The American Heart Association only recommends upper arm blood pressure monitors as finger and wrist monitors are not considered as reliable or accurate. And Dr. Gerlis agrees, saying wrist monitors are not as reliable in my experience.

A 2020 study of wrist monitors found that 93 percent passed blood pressure monitor validation protocols and only had, on average, a difference of 0.5 mmHg in systolic pressure and 0.2 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure from a standard sphygmomanometer. While wrist monitors are becoming more accurate, the issue they present is that proper placement and setup is even more integral to accurate readings than with upper arm monitors. That makes them easier to misuse or to use and get an inaccurate measurement.

While wrist cuffs are largely discouraged in favor of arm cuffs, the American Medical Association announced last year that wrist devices would soon be validated on validatebp.org for patients that could not use their upper arms for blood pressure monitoring the list now includes four wrist devices with the disclaimer that upper arm cuffs are preferred. The next time we test blood pressure monitors, we will include more approved devices designed to take measurements on your wrist.

Life Source: Best Cuff Size Options

Greater Goods Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitor | Amazon

It’s important to make sure that the cuff will fit snugly around the upper arm without you having to pull really hard to get it around. It also shouldn’t be so loose that the velcro overlaps or the cuff is obviously not on snugly.

“You want to be able to get a finger between the cuff without feeling like the finger is going numb, but not have it so loose that you didn’t have to work at all to get the finger in that space.

“When cuffs are too tight it often gives a higher-than-actual blood pressure because it constricts the blood vessels. If the cuffs are too loose, the blood pressure will be lower than it actually is as we aren’t really hearing the sounds adequately.

    Improved accuracy for larger arms

We like the Life Source extra large cuff because it fits arms that are too big for every other BP monitor on our list . This is great for people with particularly muscular builds because they dont have to settle for less accurate readings from a wrist blood pressure monitor or finger-type blood pressure monitor.

Stores fewer readings than other BPMs

One big miss on this blood pressure monitor is the memory storage. It stores only up to 60 readings, which is average compared to other monitors on the market. While this is acceptable on cheaper devices, its not great on a single-user device that costs over $100.

Ultimately, we think this is an excellent option if you dont fit the average arm circumference of most people.
