What Is High Blood Pressure
Blood pumping through the circulatory system is under pressure, much like the water in the pipes of a house. And just as too much water pressure can damage pipes and faucets, elevated blood pressure can spell trouble. Hypertension occurs when the force exerted against artery walls is abnormally high.
Over time, elevated pressure can cause a wide range of problems. Small bulges, called aneurysms, may form in blood vessels. The heart can become enlarged, increasing the danger of heart failure. Damage to blood vessels in the kidneys can cause them to fail. Because tiny blood vessels in the eyes are especially vulnerable to damage, hypertension can lead to vision problems and even blindness.
Many factors can lead to high blood pressure. Clearly, diet plays a role. Too much salt, too little potassium, and too much alcohol have all been found to increase the risk of high blood pressure. Too much stress and too little physical activity both increase the danger of developing high blood pressure, as does being overweight or obese. And as with many chronic illnesses, high blood pressure also tends to run in families, suggesting that genetics plays a role.
In some patients, high blood pressure is related to other medical problems or can be a side effect of certain drugs. This form of the disease is called secondary hypertension, because it happens secondary to other medical conditions.
Is Acetaminophen Really Safer Than Nsaids In Heart Disease
Megan Brooks
New research calls into question the assumption that acetaminophen is safer than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for patients with known cardiovascular disease or CVD risk factors.
The analysis found a significant correlation between the use of acetaminophen and elevated systolic blood pressure.
While acetaminophen may still be safer than NSAIDs from a bleeding risk standpoint, or in patients with known kidney disease, “the gap may not be as large as once thought,” Rahul Gupta, MD, cardiologist with Lehigh Valley Health Network, Allentown, Pennsylvania, told theheart.org | Medscape Cardiology.
“Cautious use is recommended over the long term, especially in patients with pre-existing hypertension or cardiovascular risk factors,” Gupta said.
The study was presented at the American Heart Association Hypertension Scientific Sessions 2022 in San Diego, California.
Acetaminophen is one of the most widely used over-the-counter medications, as it is considered a safer medication for long-term use since it lacks the anti-inflammatory effects of NSAIDs, Gupta explained.
NSAIDs have been known to raise blood pressure, but the effect of acetaminophen in this regard has not been well studied. Observational studies have shown contradictory results in terms of its effect on blood pressure, he noted.
They found that patients receiving acetaminophen had significantly higher systolic blood pressure compared with those receiving placebo .

Tylenol Linked To Blood Pressure
Women taking daily amounts of non-aspirin painkillers such as an extra-strength Tylenol are more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who don’t, a new study suggests.
While many popular over-the-counter painkillers have been linked before to high blood pressure, acetaminophen, sold as Tylenol, has generally been considered relatively free of such risk.
It is the only one that is not a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID, a class of medications the federal government just required to carry stricter warning labels because of the risk for heart-related problems. Those include ibuprofen and naproxen . Many had turned to those painkillers in the wake of problems with prescription drugs, such as Vioxx.
However, the new study found that women taking Tylenol were about twice as likely to develop blood pressure problems. Risk also rose for women taking NSAIDS other than aspirin.
“If you’re taking these over-the-counter medications at high dosages on a regular basis, make sure that you report it to your doctor and you’re checking your blood pressure,” said Dr. Christie Ballantyne, a cardiologist at the Methodist DeBakey Heart Center in Houston who had no role in the study.
The research found that aspirin still remains the safest medicine for pain relief. It has long been known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems and was not included in the government’s requirement for stricter labels for NSAIDs.

There is this analysis of 80,020 women in the Nurses Health Study II :

Can I Take Tylenol With My Blood Pressure Medicine
Rebecca Banks | Answered April 15, 2021 |
In general, people with high blood pressure should use acetaminophen or possibly aspirin for over-the-counter pain relief. Unless your health care provider has said its OK, you should not use ibuprofen, ketoprofen, or naproxen sodium. If aspirin or acetaminophen doesnt help with your pain, call your doctor.
While the placebo groups saw no or minimal increases in blood pressure, those taking acetaminophen experienced significant increases. In fact, study authors explain that the increases in blood pressure while taking acetaminophen were quite similar to those seen in people taking NSAIDs.
Do Pain Relievers Raise Blood Pressure

Acetaminophen is associated with decreasing pain or inflammation. As it has been in the market for a long time, there is a misconception about its working. It usually works by stopping the production of prostaglandin in the nervous system, and it decreases pain.
The connection between Tylenol and blood pressure is well displayed. You might have seen the official sites of Tylenol claiming that it did not affect blood pressure, but studies from the national library of science suggest some differences. Taking Medicine For A Cold Be Mindful Of Your Heart
Flu has so far infected more than 6 million Americans this season, and winter colds are making their rounds. If youve been hit by either, you may be thinking about heading to your local pharmacy to relieve your aches, pains and congestion.
But before you do, you need to consider how some over-the-counter cold medicines may impact your heart.
People with uncontrolled high blood pressure or heart disease should avoid taking oral decongestants, said Sondra DePalma, a physician assistant at the PinnacleHealth CardioVascular Institute at UPMC Pinnacle in Pennsylvania. And for the general population or someone with low cardiovascular risk, they should use them with the guidance of a health care provider.
DePalma co-authored guidelines released in 2017 by the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology focusing on the management of high blood pressure in adults. Both decongestants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories , found in many cold medicines, were listed as medications that could increase blood pressure.
But if you have high blood pressure or heart disease, the last thing you need is constricting blood vessels, she said. It can exacerbate or worsen the condition.
The biggest concerns are for people who have had a heart attack or stroke, or have heart failure or uncontrolled high blood pressure, Michos said.
But research on NSAIDs suggests seemingly healthy people might also be at risk.
This may be due to the compound effect.
