What It’s Like To Take A Food Sensitivity Test
Nguyen tried three tests: One from Everlywell, which is currently selling for $127 on the company’s site and relies on a blood sample. The second test, from 5 Strands, is priced at $88 on their site and required her to pluck out 15 strands of hair from the back of her neck. And the third test, which also required a hair sample, is from Ucari and costs between $69 and $99. Nugyen sent her samples to each company and received her results within two weeks.
Her results from Everlywell suggested she has a “high reactivity” to dairy milk. Test results from 5 Strands listed more than 75 foods, such as limes and almond milk, as “severe intolerances.” And Ucari’s test found 10 “severe intolerances,” including rice milk, roasted peanuts and chives.
How Should Patients Be Counselled Regarding Food Sensitivity Testing
Physicians should caution patients about the controversy surrounding testing for food sensitivity. Recent position papers from European and American allergy and immunology societies have emphasized the limitations and potential misuse of IgG4 testing, indicating that these tests are not appropriate for making a diagnosis of food allergy.5,9 Updated guidelines for the diagnosis and management of food allergy list food-specific IgG4 measurement as an unstandardized and unproven procedure, along with other tests such as hair analysis, cytotoxicity assays or electrodermal testing.1
A careful history will often clarify the nature of a patients or parents concern and whether it seems to have a consistent or reproducible relation to food. Consultation with a gastroenterologist or allergistimmunologist may be appropriate.
Patients may present for counselling only after testing for food sensitivity has been completed, bringing with them a report and detailed elimination diet plan. The situation may be additionally anxiety-provoking for parents who elected to purchase food sensitivity testing for a dependent child and now must decide whether to follow the instructions on the test report. In this situation, it may be helpful to explain the presence of food-specific IgG or IgG4 in healthy individuals, and the paucity of evidence for using these tests to diagnose food allergy or guide elimination diets.
What Is A Food Intolerance Test
A food sensitivity or food intolerance test aims to identify foods that may be causing problems for you. They cant definitively show that one food causes a specific symptom, but they can guide you in personalising your diet.
Antibody food sensitivity tests will usually measure the production of immunoglobulin G antibodies to between 50100 reactive foods. These can include dairy, grains, fruits, nuts and seeds. Again, an IgG test does not confirm a diagnosis of food sensitivity butwhen looked at in combination with your overall healthit provides some useful clinical data.5
Its also important to address whats causing the symptoms in the first place. It could be inflammation of the gut wall lining, which will need adequate gut support. Other causes include stress, excess alcohol, antibiotics and bacterial and viral infections, SIBO, yeast and parasites, to name a few!

Referral To An Allergy Clinic
If your GP suspects a food allergy, you may be referred to an allergy clinic for testing.
The tests needed can vary, depending on the type of allergy:
- if the symptoms developed quickly you’ll probably be given a skin-prick test or a blood test
- if the symptoms developed more slowly you’ll probably be put on a food elimination diet
Who Should Get Testing
It is generally recommended to only test for food sensitivities or intolerances after you have experienced symptoms of a potential problem.
If you havent had symptoms, food sensitivity testing is likely to have more downsides than benefits. No test exists that can accurately detect all food sensitivities. Testing for a wide range of possible reactions can return a false positive, which means the test shows an intolerance or sensitivity for a food that doesnt actually cause you problems. False positives can cause unnecessary changes to your diet that may affect your nutrition.
If youve had signs of a food reaction, talk with your doctor. By reviewing your experience and symptoms, the doctor can describe the pros and cons of testing for specific allergens, intolerances, and/or sensitivities.

Is Igg Food Sensitivity Testing Flawed From The Start Anyway
While the majority of evidence I have reviewed suggests that IgG based food sensitivity testing is not clinically viable, let me also highlight other inherent issues with IgG food sensitivity testing that would make it clinically challenging to use EVEN IF the results of such testing represented something of clinical utility.
Even if we were to give IgG food sensitivity testing the clinical benefit of the doubt, how can we confirm the accuracy of specific IgG tests? Are there published data about the specificity and sensitivity of such tests? For tests to have a determined sensitivity or specificity, there has to be a gold standard method for determining who actually has the disease or condition for which a test is claiming to detect. For IgG food sensitivity testing, there is essentially no gold standard determinant or agreed upon disease state . Thus no company can readily provide a reliable and clinically relevant measure of its tests sensitivity or specificity.

Three different terms are commonly used for adverse reactions to foods: food allergy, food sensitivity, and food intolerance. However, not everyone defines these terms the same way.
The term food allergy is best reserved for potentially life threatening food reactions that involve immunoglobulin E antibodies of your immune system. These are true food allergies and can cause dangerous reactions like anaphylaxis .
In contrast, food sensitivities and food intolerances generally are not life threatening but may make you feel ill.

When To Ask For Help With Allergies
If you suspect you have a food intolerance or sensitivity, Dr. May suggests that you start with keeping a food symptom journal for a few weeks to document exactly what you are eating and when, as well as the start time and type of any adverse symptoms.
If you aren’t able to figure out which food is causing the problem by journaling, and a food sensitivity is still suspected, make an appointment with your primary care doctor or allergist to follow up with additional testing to identify the specific food triggers.

What Is Tested In Blood Assays For Food Sensitivity
In testing for food sensitivity, drawn blood is exposed in vitro to a panel of foods and food components. The degree of total immunoglobulin G antibody binding to each food is quantified via enzyme- or fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assays.2 Alternatively, IgG subclass 4 binding may be measured in lieu of total IgG.
Results of testing for food sensitivity may be reported to patients as a multipage document that itemizes foods by category. For example, under dairy may be listed cheddar cheese, cottage cheese and so on. Gary was four years old when his mother brought him to my Integrative Pediatric Office. Hed had a persistent cough for several months.
