Blood Test For Cancer Screening

What Cancers Are Detected By Galleri

Ovarian cancer screening: Simple blood test shows promise

This is especially effective when you consider that some of these cancers are extremely rare and highly lethal. In the case of pancreatic cancer, which isnt normally detected until stage III or stage IV and has a one-year survival rate of 5%, it means you can catch at least some cases much earlier than normal.

Galleri can detect these cancers because of the DNA it sheds into your bloodstream. That means it doesnt detect cancers that dont shed DNA into your bloodstream, like brain cancer.

What Galleri Could Mean For Cancer Patients

Cancer is projected to become the worlds leading cause of death this year.

While the cancer death rate in the United States has declined, more than 600,000 Americans will die from cancer in 2021, according to the American Cancer Society .

This is largely because the majority of cancers are found at later stages when treatment may be more difficult.

Weve been waging a war against cancer for decades from Richard Nixons declaration to the Biden Moonshot. But we are still not winning this war, Ofman said.

We are still diagnosing the disease far too late, when its in its metastatic state. Recommended screening tests save lives, but they only cover five cancer types and screen for a single cancer at a time.

Ofman said that the cancers responsible for 71 percent of cancer deaths have no recommended early detection screening. By adding Galleri to existing screening tests, Ofman noted, theres the potential to reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses by two-thirds.

This would translate to a reduction of 5-year cancer deaths by 39 percent among those detected earlier, equating to an overall reduction of all 5-year cancer deaths by 26 percent, he said.

The Grails Galleritm Test

The GalleriTM test looks for the presence of over 50 types of cancer. This includes two different types of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. The test is designed for people who have a high risk of cancer, such as people with certain genetic abnormalities or people with a family history of cancer.

The GalleriTM test is a blood test. Youll need a doctors order to take the test. Once you have a doctors order, a blood test kit can be mailed to your home or your doctors office. Youll then have blood drawn, and the results will be available in about 2 weeks.

Results of the GalleriTM test cant diagnose pancreatic cancer. However, they can indicate the presence of cancer in your body. If your results are positive, you and your doctor can take additional steps.

Possible Risks Of Having A Blood Test

Blood sampling is a safe test. There is a possibility of:

  • bleeding and bruising – pressing hard when the needle is removed can help to stop it
  • pain – this is normally mild and can last for a few minutes
  • swelling – ask your nurse, doctor or phlebotomist to avoid an arm that is swollen or has a risk of swelling
  • feeling faint or fainting – tell the person doing your blood test if you’re feeling lightheaded or dizzy at any time
  • infection – this is very rare

Blood Testing And Cancer

In addition to serving as a general health “barometer,” blood work plays an important role in diagnosing certain types of cancer. For instance, leukemia, a cancer that affects the bodys blood-forming tissues, can sometimes be detected in a routine blood test. Specifically, the CBC test measures the levels of the various types of blood cells circulating in the bloodstream, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Although an abnormal result could point to leukemia, it is important to note that it could also indicate a benign inflammatory condition. Therefore, a physician will typically order follow-up testing to confirm or rule out a leukemia diagnosis.

Aside from leukemia, most cancers cannot be detected in routine blood work, such as a CBC test. However, specific blood tests are designed to identify tumor markers, which are chemicals and proteins that may be found in the blood in higher quantities than normal when cancer is present. One common example is theprostate-specific antigen test, which measures the level of PSA in the blood. An elevated level of PSAa protein produced by the prostate glandmay be a sign of prostate cancer.

Although blood work cannot currently be used on its own to conclusively diagnose cancer, it is often used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests, such as:

  • A physical examination
  • Imaging tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, bone scans and PET scans

Important Safety Information

The MCED test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those age 50 or older. The test does not detect all cancers and should be used in addition to routine cancer screening tests recommended by a health care provider. This test is intended to detect cancer signals and predict where in the body the cancer signal is located. Use of this test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger or undergoing active cancer treatment.

Results should be interpreted by a health care provider in the context of medical history, clinical signs and symptoms. A test result of Cancer Signal Not Detected does not rule out cancer. A test result of Cancer Signal Detected requires confirmatory diagnostic evaluation by medically established procedures to confirm cancer. If cancer is not confirmed with further testing, it could mean that cancer is not present or testing was insufficient to detect cancer, including due to the cancer being located in a different part of the body. False-positive and false-negative test results do occur. Rx only.Laboratory / Test Information

What Can I Expect During A Blood Test

Collecting a sample for a blood test takes only a few minutes. In an office, clinic, lab or hospital, your healthcare provider will:

  • Wrap a tight band around your upper arm.
  • Clean part of your skin inside of your elbow area.
  • Insert a needle into that area, which may cause a stinging or pinching feeling.
  • Attach a tube to the needle and fill the tube with blood.
  • Remove the band and the needle.
  • Put pressure on the puncture wound to help stop any bleeding.
  • Place a bandage on your skin.
  • Pros And Cons Of The Test

In a press release, Dr. Jeffrey Venstrom, chief medical officer at GRAIL, said that hile PATHFINDER was not designed to determine sensitivity or the number of cancer types detected by Galleri, 11 different cancer types were detected in this study that no standard screening today, and the false positive rate was less than 1%.

In the much larger CCGA case-control study, the Galleri test detected over 50 types of cancer, Dr. Venstrom noted.

Medical News Today also spoke with Prof. Paul Pharoah of the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology at Cambridge University, U.K. The cancer epidemiology professor said that the results published so far demonstrated the need for a randomized trial that measured overall mortality for the Gallieri test to determine if people live longer after the cancer is picked up via this test.

In this observational study they had 92 individuals with abnormal tests. Of these, only 35 turned out to have cancer, with one individual having two cancers . That means a lot of people being investigated for something they did not have.

    Prof. Paul Pharoah

Of the 36 cancers, 17 were blood malignancies. This is a very high proportion much less than 45% of all the cancers this test is said to diagnose are hematological and suggests substantial overdiagnosis of blood malignancy, Prof. Pharoah pointed out.

Blood Test For Cancer Now Available But Is It Ready For Prime Time

Aug. 11, 2022 â A new blood test that can detect up to 50 cancers from a single blood sample is gaining traction in the United States.

The Galleri blood test is being offered by several U.S. health networks, which have teamed up with the company that developed it. They include the Department of Veterans Affairs, Mercy Health, Ochsner Health, Intermountain Healthcare, Community Health Network, Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University, Premier, and Cleveland Clinic.

Cleveland Clinic’s Eric Klein, MD, is enthusiastic about the test, describing it in a blog post as âgame-changingâ because it can detect many different cancers and at a very early stage.

Current screening for cancer focuses on one cancer at a time: for example, mammograms for breast cancer and colonoscopy for colorectal cancer.

In contrast, the Galleri test involves just one blood sample, which is then analyzed for particles that are shed by all cancers into the bloodstream, known as cell-free or circulating tumor DNA. It detects whether there is cancer present, and where the cancer may be.

This test âcompletely changes the way we think about screening for cancer,â says Jeff Venstrom, MD, chief medical officer at GRAIL, the company marketing the test.

But there is some concern among doctors that widespread use of the test is premature.

The company emphasizes that the Galleri test is intended to complement recommended cancer screenings, such as mammograms.

Is It Hard To Catch Pancreatic Cancer Early

Table 1 from Tests detecting biomarkers for screening of colorectal ...

Pancreatic cancer is difficult to diagnose early. Pancreatic cancer very rarely causes early symptoms, and people without an elevated risk for pancreatic risk arent typically screened for cancer.

Often, pancreatic cancer isnt found until symptoms appear unless its found during testing for another, unrelated, condition. As more early-detection tests are developed and become available, this might change, and screening for pancreatic cancer could become standard.

What Is The Jack Andraka Test For Pancreatic Cancer

In 2012, high school student Jack Andraka won the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair grand prize and the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award for developing a possible method of detecting the early stages of pancreatic cancer.

His test method used paper antibody sensor strips to measure levels of a cancer biomarker called mesothelin. The test was said to be fast, accurate, and inexpensive.

However, although it received acclaim and drew international attention, Jack Andrakas work hasnt been published in any peer-reviewed scientific journals. Additionally, the initial results havent been duplicated by further studies. The test strips arent currently in development and no further clinic tests have been announced.

Is The Galleri Blood Test Fda Approved

Currently, the Galleri test isnt U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved. For now, if youre over the age of 50 and have a family history of cancer, are at higher risk for cancer or youre immunocompromised and youre interested in taking the Galleri test, you should talk to your healthcare provider. They can register with GRAIL and order the test .

    Does It Save Lives

The fundamental question for any screening test is not only does it pick up cancers but do people survive for longer after their cancer is picked up. This study does not tell us much about whether the test would be useful for screening, but I dont think the findings are encouraging, said Pharoah. We knew before the study was done that a randomised trial with mortality as the main end point was needed and we now know that a randomised trial is needed.

Unless there is adequate follow up with control groups we wont know whether we are diagnosing cancers earlier and usefully, or whether we are subjecting people to lead time bias and overdiagnosis. Fundamentally though, science by press release isnt good for evidencewe need to be able to analyse the full results, she told The BMJ.

    Possibility Of Early Diagnosis

The NHS has a target of diagnosing 75% of all cancers at stage 1 or 2 by 2028, from around 50% currently. The Galleri test is seen as an important tool to help achieve this target. If the results from the Grail pilot are positive then the trial will be expanded to involve around one million participants across 2024 and 2025 and eventually be offered routinely in the NHS.6

Naser Turabi, director of evidence and implementation at Cancer Research UK, said, All too often, people are diagnosed with cancer at a late stage, when their disease is more difficult to treat. This often means more expensive treatments, hospital stays, and monitoring, and more lives lost to cancer.

Blood tests for multiple types of cancer used to belong in the realm of science fiction, but now they are an area of cancer research that is showing promise for patients. Research like this is crucial for making progress against late stage cancers, and giving more patients the chance of a good outcome.

But Pharoah pointed out, Only 14 out of the 36 cancers detected were early stage which is no different from the proportion of cancers that are currently diagnosed at an early stage in the UK. So the potential for reducing mortality does not seem great.

How Does The Galleri Test Work

The blood test involved a single blood sample from the patient, which is then tested for methylation in the DNA – one of the hallmarks of cancer.

Methylation is when methyl groups – common units of organic compounds – are detected in the DNA. They do not alter the DNA code, but they can alter gene expression.

The test is conducted with DNA sequencing and machine learning to analyse methylation patterns in the DNA from the blood.

This analysis can then spot cancer signals, and predict where cancer might be in the body.

According to GRAIL, the Galleri test can detect signals from more than 50 types of cancer.

Fit Test For Colon Cancer Screening

Cancer screening tests look for changes in your body that could be a sign of cancer. The test result isnt a cancer diagnosis or a sign that youre cancer free. Sometimes, cancer screening tests show unusual results of changes in your body. In that case, your healthcare provider may recommend additional tests. Just like initial screening tests, simply having an additional test doesnt mean you have cancer.
